It's been a staple of Science Fiction since the early days, with Captain Kirk first using a food "synthesizer" in the sixites,(later the "replicator" for Captain Picard's tea and Captain Janeway's many shots of coffee). Perhaps it's not quite the brave new world of Star Trek just yet but now lab-grown meat seems near to being a real possibility. As Chris Baranuik in this BBC article puts it, decoupling meat from livestock and agriculture might alleviate the ethical dilemmas around eating animals but, perhaps, raises many more questions.... not least "is it vegetarian?" and whether or not we'd actually want to eat it!Read article
